[The girls eyes downward, away from his face. Her smile grows ever so faint, and she nods her head slowly, somberly. Then, her mouth moves, forming words. Her voice is very quiet though, sounding more like a hushed whisper than an actual conversational tone. It soon becomes clear that she's only repeating two words, over and over.]

My fault... my fault... my fault...

[Souji blinks hard, a look of open shock flashing across his face, as if he's been slapped, as if he's had a sword shoved through his stomach. He's no stranger to this exact thought. Guilty; guilty; guilty.]

You ... think you're responsible? For what happened?

[Her voice keeps to the level of a hushed whisper, from a distance it would look like her mouth is moving without speaking. Only by being close by, and listening closely could anyone hear what's she actually saying.]

If I had been with him... If I had killed Ultron... If I had been stronger... If I had told him to stay... If I had gone instead...

You can't blame yourself.

[He frowns; Souji knows it's easier to say this to someone else than to believe it yourself.]

I don't know exactly what happened, Wanda, but - you didn't kill him. I saw that much.

[The muttering actually stops, the girl looks up at Souji, tears streaming from her eyes.]

I... I miss him... so much...

[The first comprehensive Wanda has said directly to Souji since he entered this room. The first sign of her dream-like daze breaking.]

[He smiles sadly at her, and stretches out his hand, an offering of shared understanding, if she wishes to accept.]

I lost someone too. I miss her every day. I think ... that's how you know they were important, maybe. Because you can't forget them.

[She reaches out her own hand, hesitant at first, but ultimately accepting his own. She still has tears streaming down her face, but her expression is a little less sad and a little more understanding, agreeing with Souji's sentiment.]

You... lost someone too?

[His grip on her hand is gentle, warm, reassuring; he absently traces his thumb over her knuckles as he nods, dropping his gaze to the floor.]

My cousin. She was very important to me. She was kidnapped, and I didn't save her in time. She got very sick, and ... she died.

[Souji looks back up to her, the smile on his face gone thin.]

I understand what it's like ... to lose someone you love, to feel responsible for it.

[At Souji's explanation, Wanda's eyes tear up once more, but her expression is not one of despair like before. Instead, they are tears of sympathy, her expression clearly upset, but it is directed away from her own pain this time. Now, it is empathy for Souji. In one movement, she moves forward from a sitting position, resting on her knees, she wraps her arms around Souji, hugging him tightly.]

[It's a little surprising, but - it shouldn't be, Souji realizes, a little after the fact, as he moves to pull her closer into the embrace.]

I'm sorry. I'm so sorry.

[Wanda just shakes her head, burying her face in his shoulder. She can't really bring her mouth to form words at the moment. Instead, she's content to just let the tears and the pain she's feeling, for both of them, spill out.]

[Souji holds her close, silent, a calm eye in the center of a storm. There's really nothing to say; he knows from experience how hollow words fall in this situation, so there's no point in speaking. Nothing he could say will make this devastating loss hurt less, heal the hole in her heart.

So he holds on tightly to her, and hopes that's enough to help.]

[After a few moments of staying like that, wrapped in comforting arms and only the sound of crying in the room. Wanda eventually pulls herself apart from Souji, looking at him with some tears still in her eyes. There's an expression of true gratitude on her face, however, a smile on her face too.]

[At that moment, the back door to the prison cell opens. Bright light streaming in, washing over the two of them. It is blinding, making it soon impossible to see anything.]

[When Yu is able to open his eyes, after the light fades completely, he'll find himself back in his room on the Marsiva. His time in Wanda's calibration room has ended.]
