Before you post your topcomment, please:
1. Check the first letter of your character's name as its written in our tags. A-M names go to the other post, and N-Z names comment here.
2. Make a note in your topcomment if anything especially triggering or graphic might show up in the Calibration. If you're not sure if something's worth noting or not, we suggest listing it anyway, just to err on the side of caution.
3. Put your character's name (it can be shortened or different from the tag, this time) in the subject of your comment. This will help visitors find you easily, and help us update the list below.
4. Post your comment! It's fine if everyone's Calibrations end up looking and reading very different from one another. As long as you're having fun and following our guidelines, you're good to go. :)
5. If you have any questions or concerns during Calibrations, you are welcome to send them towards the mod team at any time, as always.

[it takes him a minute to orient himself, but as soon as he realizes that he's being driven somewhere, and really catches sight of the scenery, he's sitting bolt upright with a gasp.]

Wow! Oh, wow... [and it takes him a few grinning moments more to even think to look over at the driver.]

--Hey, what's going on? Where are we going?

[if he'd been a dog, he'd probably have his head hanging out in the wind right the heck now.]

[Shawn laughs as he catches sight of the other guy. Huh, a totally unfamiliar dude, but he did promise Eric & Jack that he'd give people rides from time to time. Maybe this guy's one of their friends? The blue hair kinda SCREAMS "friend of Eric Matthews." ]

Why don't you tell me, man? That's the beauty of a road trip - you call the shots, and I'll take you where you want to go.

[Right on cue, a green exit sign pops up on the right side of the road, with four choices:
    A) Topanga Canyon, 5 miles away,
    B) Pennbrook University, 7 miles away
    C) John Adams High, 15 miles away
    D) Cornelius Corner, 8 miles away

Shawn glances over at him expectantly. The choice is all his: he can see all four options, some of them, or absolutely none at all and stay on the highway.]

    Whoa, really?

[normally that kind of choice would be totally intimidating, but he's feeling kind of bold today. the idea of traveling somewhere for no real reason is exciting enough that he's motivated to take advantage of it.

and as the sign swoops by, he... honestly picks the one that is easiest to read. it's never been his strong suit.]

John Adams... something? [he only caught part of it in time.]

Oh hey, you mean my old high school?

[Shawn grins, putting his turn signal on as he moves the car towards an upcoming exit sign.] Sure thing.

[Except, as the car exits the highway, it fades away, and you're left standing on your best friend's back porch. Your English teacher, Mr. Turner, had just caught you and your best friend Cory trying to fight for their rights, like the good people in The Grapes of Wrath. (See, Mr. Turner had promised you that if you read the book, you wouldn't take a test. So for once in your life, you read the whoooole thing, cover to cover.

Then, of course, he springs a test on you, and your whole class goes on strike.)

Problem is, you're in 6th grade. You've got no real ground to stand on. So Mr. Turner asks you to apologize to your principal, Mr. Feeny - and to Mr. Turner's surprise? Mr. Feeny's your best friend's neighbor.

So you and Cory get to talk to your old teacher, in the presence of Mr. Feeny. As Mr. Turner sets the scene, you fidget with your clothes, looking anywhere but at your teachers' faces. You know what you've done.

So Cory begins, "Look, Mr. Feeny, we got it all wrong, 'cause we read this book all the way to the beginning."

Mr. Feeny gives you that nod, like he wants to believe you but he's really not sure you did actually read the whole thing. "Really, and I suppose you didn't learn anything from it."

"Well, we learnt you're supposed to fight back against things you think are unfair," Cory replies, as you continue to hang back awkwardly.

"And that's the parallel you drew from the Joad family?"

You laugh a little. "Well, they were out in the real world, and they knew they had something to fight for."

"How did the Joads relate to you?"

Understanding dawns on your best friend's face. "I guess they don't. We're just kids."

"Yeah, we're really not out in the world yet."

"They had nothing to eat, and nowhere to live..."

"All they knew is that they deserved a decent wage."

"And all we know is..." Your best friend shrugs helplessly. "Nothing."

So you decide to lighten the mood with your best impression by going, "And wherever there's a guy who don't know nothing, I'll be there." You've got your finger raised in the air and everything - and well, it actually works.

Mr. Feeny's got a rare smile (the kind you almost never see) on his face as he says, "Well said."

"It's from the book. I actually read it." You're so, so proud of that too - who knew reading could be fun?

"I believe you did, and I'll take that into consideration."

You and your best friend look at him expectantly, and so he finally - finally! - lets you and your friend go back inside while he talks to Mr. Turner. As you walk back inside, you think (maybe) you can hear Mr. Feeny conceding, "Well, it sounds as if they actually know the material."

    You must've imagined it.

The backyard gives way to the road again, and well - as Shawn peers up at Nel from the driver's seat, he looks almost proud of himself. Maybe this memory was worth revisiting after all.]

[Nel squints and blinks at the return of the clear sun and open wind, a little disoriented until he catches up to the fact that he's on the road again.

after a minute to mull over what he's just seen and regain his senses, he peers back--still looking a little dazed, but awed too.]

...That was you? And your friend?

Uh-huh. Me and Cory, back in the 6th grade.

[At some point, he should probably figure out if this guy's from Earth or not, because a lot of his dreams have involved explanations and a ton of exposition - but he's too amused to care.]

We weren't the greatest students then, but a lesson like that... well, it taught us to take our work more seriously.

[well, he has pointed ears, so that's probably a pretty good indicator that he's probably not from good ol' Earth. but he seems absorbed in the story of it either way.]

Is that how it always was? ...School and stuff?

[Fair, pointy-eared bro. Cosplay is not exactly mainstream in 1998.]

I guess so, yeah. I had a part-time job in high school, but when you're a kid, you don't really do much besides school and homework.
