{Wanda nods her head, signals to Souji to get ready to move in. Then, turning to face Namatame, her hands and eyes flare up with crimson red energy. She channels her anger, her desire to protect the girl. She then pushes her hands forward, towards Namatame. A surge of energy shoots from her hands, pulling his hand free from around the girl and throwing him backwards through the air.]

[Souji races forward to catch Nanako as she's freed from Namatame's grasp, catching her in his arms before she tumbles to the ground. Namatame rights himself, head snapping up in a murderous glare to Wanda and Souji; the blue mist swirling around him darkens, thickens, partially obscuring Namatame behind it. He growls, menacing:]

Give ... her ... back! I'm ... I'm going ... to save her!

[Souji picks Nanako up and retreats behind one of the pillars surrounding the staircase, leaning her up against it and out of harm's way.]

Hang in there, Nanako.

[Then he quickly returns to Wanda's side, watching Namatame as the thick, dark fog churns faster and faster around the other man, parts breaking off and attaching to him.]

He's merging with the Shadows ...

[The fog darkens and spreads, blacking out all light, then suddenly disperses, revealing a transformed Namatame hovering in front of them - white robe, red wings, a large gear circling around his head.]

I'm going to save her ... don't interfere!

[Souji looks to Wanda, gives her a quick nod, then turns back to Namatame in his new form. Blue light circles around Souji, and he reaches up to crush the card hovering above him with his free hand.]

Persona!

[A giant talon-limbed woman with a large snake wrapped around her appears, and with a flick of her wrist, she brings down a great bolt of lightning on Namatame, then disappears again.]

[Wanda can only stand in shock at first. For one thing, she had not expected the man to turn into that... monster. What was he supposed to be anyways? Some kind of angelic figure? And what was with that mass of black fog that rushed all around him? "Shadows..." that had been what Souji had called them right? It was all so weird.]

[Then the woman with the snake appeared, as if answering to Souji's call. What had he said? Persona? And Wanda thought that was the one with the weird, hard to explain powers, but this... this was something else.]

[Still, she can't just stand there slack-jawed. She needs to help somehow. She is not sure what use her powers will be against that thing, so, at the very least, she gestures to Souji, signalling that she'll watch over Nanako and keep her safe.]

[He doesn't speak, but Souji somehow manages to convey gratitude to Wanda for looking after Nanako while he fights Namatame in his new form.

The battle rages on for a long time, or at least what feels like a long time; exhaustion comes more quickly in this realm of fog. Souji calls forth a number of other beings to attack Namatame: a many headed-hound; a woman with multiple arms; a robed skeleton atop a white horse. Some answer to a specific name, some only to the word "Persona," but each deals a heavy blow - fire, ice, wind - to Namatame, who directs his own massive strikes toward Souji in return.

It's very close, but in the end, Souji is the one left standing, and Namatame crashes to the ground in a cloud of dust, returning to his original form, a man in a uniform.]

Dammit ... why?

[He falls to his knees, then slumps over, face first, onto the ground.]

[Wanda watched the ensuing battle with relative awe. She had never really quite seen anything like this, the powers that Souji displayed. They were strange, but clearly quite strong. As the conflict ends and the man called Namatame collapses, Wanda is silent for a moment, looking from the man to Souji then back to the man.]

Is... is he dead?

No. [Souji shakes his head, breathing heavily.] Just exhausted. We need to get him out of here - and Nanako, too, she's -

[His own exhaustion dissipates, replaced by panic.]

Is she hurt? She was having trouble breathing.

[Wanda looks down at the girl in her arms, checking her pulse before looking back up at Souji.]

Her pulse is there, but it's faint. We should get her medical attention as fast as we can.

[Souji nods, lips pressed together in a thin line of worry; the expression doesn't leave his face even after they arrive at the hospital and allowed to see Nanako in her room. The girl is unconscious, breathing with difficulty, a tiny shape in proportion to the bed. Souji holds his arms tight around himself, focus trained entirely on Nanako.]

[Wanda doesn't know what she should say, what comfort she can offer at the moment. They've done everything they can for the girl, gotten her the to a hospital as quickly as they could. Really, it was up to time now. Still, she can tell that Souji is struggling to hold it together, so she'll approach him on his left. She hesitantly extends an arm, touches his shoulder, and then reassuringly wrests her hand there. If he gives any sign of discomfort with the gesture, she's ready to pull her hand back.]

[On the contrary; he's very comfortable having her here by his side. Souji glances over to her with a grateful smile, bringing his own hand up to cover hers with a gentle squeeze.

For a while, the room is silent except for the quiet beeps and whirring of the machinery surrounding the bed. Finally, Souji does speak - quiet, barely more than a whisper:]

She has to wake up.

[Wanda nods her head. Unsure of what she should say, what she can do to provide him with some comfort.]

She will. She just needs to rest. I'm sure of it.

[She manages to get the words out, and she tries to sound genuine about it too. However, a faintly discernible degree of doubt lingers about her voice though. She grips Souji's shoulder a little tighter, a little more reassuringly as if to make up for her tone of doubt.]

She's so small. And she was in that place for so long.

[Souji rubs the back of his neck, an absent-minded gesture.]

[Wanda opens her mouth for a moment, about to ask the obvious question of where exactly they had been. And what exactly that monster that man became was. Instead, though, she recognizes that now is not really the best time. Instead she offers what little words of comfort she can think to offer, and hopes they'll be enough--and that they won't be made false.]

Give her time to rest. In a few days... I'm sure there will be some kind of improvement.

[Souji nods, and opens his mouth to say something in reply, but he's cut short by the sudden frenetic beeping noise one of the machines starts to make. The girl on the bed makes a pained crying sound, and Souji rushes to the side of the bed, panicked, searching for the call button and pressing it over and over once he has the device in his hand.]

[Wanda simply steps back, her expression grim and sad. She clutches her own arm, her grip tightening with each passing second as she watches the scene unfold before her. She says a silent prayer in her head, begging for her dark thoughts earlier to not be made true.]
