Before you post your topcomment, please:
1. Check the first letter of your character's name as its written in our tags. A-M names go to the other post, and N-Z names comment here.
2. Make a note in your topcomment if anything especially triggering or graphic might show up in the Calibration. If you're not sure if something's worth noting or not, we suggest listing it anyway, just to err on the side of caution.
3. Put your character's name (it can be shortened or different from the tag, this time) in the subject of your comment. This will help visitors find you easily, and help us update the list below.
4. Post your comment! It's fine if everyone's Calibrations end up looking and reading very different from one another. As long as you're having fun and following our guidelines, you're good to go. :)
5. If you have any questions or concerns during Calibrations, you are welcome to send them towards the mod team at any time, as always.

It was a programming matrix he was given, though the one who gave it to him did not know what she had done. He repeated it to me, and I incorporated it into my own brain.

[One of the 'windows' flicker into life, Daneel's view of a robot in his arms, obviously in distress by the way it moves jerkily, the strain in its voice, the flickering light behind its glowing eyes. While Daneel listens carefully, Giskard repeats a long string of numbers with increasing difficulty.]

[The words mean nothing and the replay does little to help him understand it, but the basics of it make sense to him.]

    You wove into you.

    [personal profile] thezerothlaw 2015-11-20 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. That is a good way of putting it. Before that, I could not touch minds as I do now.

And then he gave you the pattern to weave into yourself.

You can reweave yourself. That's very powerful.

Potentially, yes. Still, it remains... difficult.

    [He frowns.]

I have done it twice. Once with the Zeroth Law, and once with Giskard's matrix, but the former took me a long time, and Giskard was preparing me for the latter beforehand. A misstep could easily be fatal.

    [personal profile] killedwithlove 2015-11-21 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
    What is the Zeroth law?
    thezerothlaw: (curious)

    [personal profile] thezerothlaw 2015-11-21 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
A robot must not harm humanity, nor through inaction allow humanity to come to harm.

    [He's very serious.]

The First Law then states that a robot must not harm a human, nor through inaction allow a human to come to harm, unless doing so comes into conflict with the Zeroth Law. The Second Law states a robot must obey all orders given by a human, except where doing so comes into conflict with the Zeroth and First Law. The Third Law states that a robot must protect its own existence, except where doing so comes into conflict with the Zeroth, First, and Second Laws.

The Three Laws are built into all robots. The Zeroth is... my own addition.

So... if a man was going to push a button that would tear apart the world, you could hurt him to stop him but not otherwise?

    [He's trying to understand.]
    thezerothlaw: (concerned)

    [personal profile] thezerothlaw 2015-11-22 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
That is precisely it. Even then, I would prefer to cause as little harm as possible. On the other hand, if the destruction of a world were contingent on the continued existence of humanity, that is what would be necessary.

    [Yes, that came up once.]

    [personal profile] killedwithlove 2015-11-22 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
You must preserve humans above the world they live on.

    That... seems wrong to me.
    thezerothlaw: (adorablebot)

    [personal profile] thezerothlaw 2015-11-23 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Does it? Certainly, it would not be preferable to destroy a world, but there are other planets humanity may thrive on. What would you suggest?
    killedwithlove: (Dangerous)

    [personal profile] killedwithlove 2015-11-23 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
... but there's more than humanity on the world. There's plants and animals and spirits, even if you can't see them, you can't think of a world as just something for humans. Those other living things have a right to their world.
    thezerothlaw: (calm)

    [personal profile] thezerothlaw 2015-11-24 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
I feel I would be aware of spirits. I am aware of you, after all. I don't believe they exist where I am from.

But when humans spread through the galaxy, they take their plants and animals with them. A world can be replaced. Humanity cannot.
    killedwithlove: (Conversational)

    [personal profile] killedwithlove 2015-11-24 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not like other spirits. I'm on this side. They're not.

Why can't humanity be replaced? There are other races, other people.
    thezerothlaw: (curious)

    [personal profile] thezerothlaw 2015-11-24 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
There aren't other races, where I am from. There are only humans, and the robots that they made. They are the only sapient race in the entire galaxy. There is no one to replace them.
    thezerothlaw: (neutral)

    [personal profile] thezerothlaw 2015-11-26 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
No one. Perhaps in other galaxies are other worlds that were conducive to intelligent life, but those distances are many times greater than the distance between stars. Surely humanity must be worth preserving.
