"I'm certain we'd all like to know that," he says, almost mockingly. "But we are given this glorious lie, that we are the puppetmaster, when we are not. What a pretty liar it is."

"Of course we all want to believe we are the masters of our own destinies. It's one of the first priorities of the ego."

Surely Loki knows that.

"Learning otherwise is essential to maturity. If we fail to fight against it, however, only then are we truly lost."

[complicatedliar]

"And all will be well." Loki paces. "So is that what you propose? You are fighting against this fate?"

[unbearablynaive]

"When I can." His expression doesn't change, still slightly interested but mostly neutral. "There are certainly times when it suits my purpose to play along with it as well."

He is still here in the Fleet, after all.

[complicatedliar]

"And what of those around you?" Still doesn't trust you, android boy. At all. He didn't survive this long by being dumb.

[unbearablynaive]

"I try to protect them."

Why, was that supposed to be a trick question?

[complicatedliar]

"From yourself?"

[unbearablynaive]

Ah. There's the real question.

"I do not need to try for that. I don't use my powers on others, except in defense."

[complicatedliar]

"Ah, of course." His lips curl. "Well yes, lady, I kill people, but they are all bad people."

[unbearablynaive]

"There has only been one, and he did intend for several billion people to die within the next few minutes."

He shrugs. It had been necessary.

[complicatedliar]

"I'm certain your excuse pleases your little human friends. Good job."

[unbearablynaive]

"Does that make you feel morally superior to me, because you do not give an excuse?"

[complicatedliar]

"Considering I find the ignored-when-convenient concept of human morality completely without merit?" He leans forward. "It means that the god of lies is more honest than you, because he can admit because I wanted to is reason enough. Though I suppose you can go with the abuser's cousin--because he made me."

If he's better than humans (and he is) it's because he's a god, and he's smarter than them, and stronger. Morality is a farce.

[unbearablynaive]

That's ridiculous enough that the Vision actually laughs. "Yes, that's clearly superior to imposing your own motives on me. I didn't want to and I wasn't made to. I made a choice that put the lives of others above my own distaste. That trumps I wanted to for me."

[complicatedliar]

"Oh, so you made a choice without wanting to. How... fascinating. And you made that particular choice... why?" He smiles sweetly. "Because of course, this all does wash your hands clean. Poor thing. He never wanted to be a killer."

[unbearablynaive]

"No, I made that choice because it was the right thing to do. I suppose you still don't understand that."

[complicatedliar]

"Because, hm. You had no other choices? You convinced yourself you had no other choices? Because... oh! Yes, murder is all right when you do it. Because of your vaunted morals, which allow you to sit as judge, jury and executioner of the worth of lives in balance, as decreed by your own personal belief in your righteousness.

"Yes. How foolish for me to have misunderstood that point."

[unbearablynaive]

"Loki."

He's not sure whether to laugh again or throw his hands into the air.

"If you understood morals at all you would already have known that. Pretending your selfishness is superior only proves otherwise."

[complicatedliar]

Loki laughs at him. "Gravity is real. Conservation of energy is real. The dichotomy of wave and particle are real. I'd even admit that love is a sort of truth. But morality? Morals are stories that children like to tell themselves. You really ought to get out more. The human superiority complex will rot your brain."

He waves a hand and turns to walk away.

Ah, well, if Loki's going to leave, the Vision will let him. The "Exit" sign is there for a reason, after all.

Besides, if Loki doesn't want to admit there's such a thing as the right thing to do, well, that's just something he'll have to discover for himself--or constantly have the Avengers on his tail.
