[Now that he's properly settled in, Mikleo is determined to stock up on as much fresh food as he possibly can when they inevitably leave this fantastic place. Unfortunately, it's hard to get a job when none of the residents can see him. Sure, he can help out here and there doing jobs with people who can see him, but that isn't much, and it's not like they get double pay.

Thus, he's made himself a business: at the edge of one of the markets near the beach (where refreshments are the most craved), there's a little display set up, with a handful of little cups and spoons, and beside them, set in ice, is a collection of buckets of ice cream and shaved ice, in varying flavours of fruit that can be purchased in the market. There's even vanilla bean and chocolate, tucked away in the corners. There's also a sign- "1 scoop = 1 acorn", with an extra cup waiting expectantly for payment. He'll be replenishing the flavours as they run out and rotating them, so who knows what the rest might be at any given time.

Beside the display, only half-attentive since people would get scared off if the ice cream served itself, Mikleo is reading a book. Don't steal!!]

[Now this is interesting. Usually the only entrepreneur around is himself, considering the mess he made on the beach before. He's been gathering herbs all day and he's feeling the heat, so... why not. Why not come over. He's very impressed by the setup, and sure enough, decides to donate a few acorns to the cause so he has at least one of each flavor (that he can see, that is).

It's obvious Mikleo isn't interested in conversation, so he just shoves a spoon into his mouth. There's a critical pause... an eyebrow for evaluation, and then the final verdict:]

This is actually quite good. -- What are you reading?

[THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION OF ALL.]

[Mikleo pauses, glancing over in surprise. He'd expected the person to already be gone, since he'd heard the little clink of acorns dropping into the cup, but sure enough, he's actually getting looked at. Huh.

Shaking off his shock, he tucks a little bookmark into place and offers the book out.]

I found a book on this world's fairy tales, so I thought I'd give it a try. It's not the most advanced read, but it's undeniably interesting.

Reading fairy tales from another world gives you a close look at what they value, and even some of their traditions. I had quite a collection before I left the first time. [He sets his ice cream down so that he can take the book (sorry Mikleo) and flip through it.] The word count is certainly made up for by the intricate illustrations many of them contain.

[Mikleo straightens up and leans in, peering over to get a better look at what he's referring to. Ah...! What is this, a fellow scholar!?]

Yes, exactly! I've been noticing a pattern repeated in a number of the stories. I want to know what it means, but I haven't worked it out just yet.

[His eyes widen, and he stares at Mikleo with a sense of excitement.]

It's a repeating pattern?! Then it must definitely be cultural. It could be a literal representation of something, or it could be like the dwarves' fascination with knots-- simply a pattern they find pleasing...

[He doesn't want to give the book back, he wants to find out, but he also recognizes that this book was found by Mikleo first so he... hands it over. Besides, his ice cream might melt.]

Come to think of it, the pattern resembles embroidery I've seen in the shops.

Yeah! Towns are pretty isolated where I'm from. They weren't always, but something happened awhile back that made it that way. And now no one really remembers what's outside their area, besides old stories.

But...that's where rangers come in! They go out into the wilderness, explore, and learn what's out there!

Ahh, so they're another word for explorers. That makes sense. There are those who do much the same where I'm from, as well.

Oh yeah?

So you and Sorey are gonna become explorers and do the same thing! I mean, if you aren't already. That's cool!

Well, technically we are already, but most of what we're exploring is old ruins, rather than the wild. Although we do plenty of that, too.

Ruins? Wow, cool! I've only been to the old city ruins, but, not very far.

What's the coolest thing you've seen?

They're beautiful!

[ Maglor's eyes are very bright with wonder as he looks around ]

So unique. I have never seen anything like this before.

[Mikleo swims a bit closer, stretching a hand out to rest, unmoving, just above a patch of coral where some multicoloured fish are grazing.]

Same here. It's amazing... and it's hard to believe how much life is flourishing right under my feet!

[ Maglor ducks underwater to watch the anemones closer, smiling at the way the brightly coloured creatures shelter small fishes in their tentacles, before coming up for air ]

I am astonished by the sheer variety of lives! It is truly a whole separate world to itself.

It really is. These creatures could live their whole lives without even knowing there's a surface at all... it's amazing here.

[Mikleo glances thoughtfully over at him, pondering. Armatization had solved the issue of air for he and Sorey, but since then he'd been trying to resolve the whole issue of air requirement. It's a harder problem to sort out than he'd like.]

About how long can you hold your breath, anyway?

Truly! [ Maglor nods ] I suppose to them, we are the strangers.

[ He considers ]

I do not know - I never timed myself, but... I suppose I could at least manage a minute, probably two.

[An ice cream stand has to be one of the smarter ideas Stefan's seen in a while. Sure, he doesn't need it, but after a hot summer's day? Especially after Eid? It's a treat.

A well-deserved, super yummy one - and yeah, he's already reaching into the pockets of his swim trunks to pay for a scoop. The handwriting looks kinda familiar, but he doesn't think much about it.]

Slow day? [He tilts his head towards Mikleo, offering a shy smile.] Or is your book just that good?

[Speaking of familiar, Mikleo's pretty sure he knows that voice- and it's cemented when he glances up to find Stefan watching him. Like, legitimately looking at him. That's new.

He sits up in his chair, folding the book closed with a smile. What a pleasant surprise.]

Just keeping an eye on things. People are likely to steal if they believe they aren't being watched.

Really? [Stefan shoots him an amused look.] It's pretty obvious that you're right there.

[Sure, this guy sounds like Mikleo, but there's no way. Seraphim are invisible creatures, only discernible to Sorey and a few others. If he'd gained the ability, he would think that he'd know.]

Not so. It's only obvious if you have sufficient resonance to see me.

[He'll just let that sink in, since apparently it hasn't yet.]

Koala, quite obliviously as always to Mikleo's existence, just assumes the stand is empty. She dumps a ton of acorns in the bucket, because... well, it's good to be polite, and Koala is a painfully good tipper. Perhaps too good.

[Is the thing she heard laughter, by any chance? Because her generous donation to the ice cream fund is making him chuckle. He's glad that she's happy, at least.]
