[Keith was definitely impressed with the area. It felt grand and regal on a level he'd only seen a few times before back home.

He was drawn to the center by the web of cracks, and he moved to read the inscription on the hammer. His first instinct was to reach out, just to nudge it slightly to make it easier to read...]

[ It feels imposing, like thunderclouds above your head. Everything feels narrowed to you and this singular object, this force of nature. It doesn't even budge. You are caught in its vortex and an overwhelming need to prove yourself. Can you lift it? Dare you try? ]

[A need to prove himself? Yeah... Keith was susceptible to that sensation and easily gave in. Of course he was going to try. He gave a good yank...]

[ Mjolnir. It feels imposing, like thunderclouds above your head. Everything feels narrowed to you and this singular object, this force of nature. You are caught in its vortex and an overwhelming need to prove yourself. Can you lift it? Dare you try? ]

[ Mjolnir doesn't seem to budge. The lights around you dim, leaving nothing else but the dark and stars all around you. They sing to you, the song of the universe, but you can only hear it in your soul. your fingers strain but it will not budge.

In fact, you seem to be sinking a little. Your every insecurity is screaming at you in your head, you can't do it, you can't lift it, no one can lift it, you're not worthy. ]

[It was an odd sensation, but Keith kept trying, pushing through the crushing sensation of failure. But those feelings would win out eventually. As much as Keith still felt like he had something to prove, that he needed to show people he wasn't still that troubled teenager that acted out and started fights, it was there. That past, hiding behind his shaky confidence as he couldn't help but wonder when everything was going to fall apart, that he was going to just fail again...

No... he wasn't worthy, was he? He ran away. He abandoned the team. He'd been selfish again, hadn't he? He just wasn't ready to be the leader. Shiro was the stronger leader. But, should he have left? He sank to his knees as he gave up, releasing the hammer's handle.]

Do not despair.

[ When you turn, Loki is there. He seems a little … different. Someone seems to have taken a brush to his face, because there are swathes of blue in a zig-zag pattern and one of his eyes seem to be a dark, blood red. His form seems to flicker on and off as if he’s not truly there and his voice tends to distort, like radio static. ]

There is little worthiness to be found in a hammer.

[Keith looked up. He recognized Loki, but... well, that was a change. He looked confused for a moment.]

I don't understand... why have the test if it doesn't mean anything?

[ loki smiles, bittersweet. ]

Why do we all try to prove ourselves? It never means anything. It will never budge because I will never be worthy.

[That was... actually really deep, and caused Keith to actually stop and think. Really, he was kind of putting a lot of the pressure he felt on himself. He got up carefully, his legs a little shaky, but he managed to stay on his feet.]

I guess that makes sense if you feel that way. But, isn't it worth trying to be?

It depends on where your motivations stem from.

[ loki's motivations were born from his father, his brother. people he had looked up to but found him lacking. of course it'll never budge for him. loki's worth isn't determined by thor or anyone else.

but mjolnir sits in the center. it will not go away. ]

You should be careful here. Those with weakness in their hearts will not last long in a place like this.

[Keith looked back at the hammer again. He didn't want to feel that again. It was crushing. He stepped back, but the red cape caught his eye.

That last statement hung in his mind, though.]

Weakness.

[He steeled himself, and approached the cape.]

Isn't this... This is Thor's, right?

[Super heroes and their capes, huh? Keith hesitated to touch it, though.]

[ loki cocks his head. ]

It is like Thor's.

[ the red cloak is a little longer than the one thor would wear and the top is lined with fur. if you touch it, you hear the distant applause at the back of your mind. ]

[Gingerly, Keith reached out and touched the fur, the applause causing him to be curious.]

Then who...?

[ the cheering gets minutely louder. blurry people seem to appear before you, but cannot take substantial form yet. loki watches him, bemused, red eye glinting. ]

Do you want to feel worthy? Try it on.

[Keith looked back at Loki again at the suggestion. Well... if he was okay with it...

He hefted the large cape to his shoulders. Why not?]

[ Once you put it on, everything starts to melt away. there are legions of people gathered in the aisles, cheering for you, yes you, eyes bright and shiny with admiration. the applause is thunderous that it masks the beating of your heart. even your — your friends seem to smile at you, respect you as they bow in acknowledgement. and when you turn and raise your hands, it only gets louder. you summon mjolnir to your hands and raise it above your head.

and the watering in your eyes? it's only the light.

"Loki"

The name jerks you out of the scene like a snap of a rubberband. ]

[Keith had never felt comfortable in front of a crowd, but his own feelings were drowned by those in the memory... after all, this was Loki's calibration, and the idea was to experience it from his point of view. Keith's own feelings of having to be "on" in public were pushed to the side as the applause boosted him instead. The admiration, the respect, all of it... and, in a way, it was like a goal that was finally accomplished after such longing and desire to be considered worthy and to belon-

The emotional whiplash from the voice was a lot to take in. Keith turned to look for the source...]

[ there's no one there except Loki who seemed to be observing, but not making any kind of commentary. the light in the observatory flickers, ebb and flow. he smiles faintly. ]

Did you enjoy that? It is what dreams are made of. What magic can do.

[Keith swallowed.]

I don't know. Any time I've been in a situation in public like that, I don't really like it. But, this... this was different.

[He carefully removed the cloak, trying separate the two emotions in his head.]

I'm not really the type that likes being in front of crowd. I can see how someone might like that, though... if that's their thing.

[ loki cocks his head. ]

Sometimes you do not believe in acknowledgement until it can be seen and heard.

No... I believe in it. I just... [Keith sighed.] I don't need it on that level, I guess. Just the people around me who I care about is enough. [But no less important. Keith craved his team's acceptance, and often pulled away when he felt out of place.]

Whatever level it may be, it never matters until you are seen.

[ whether loki wanted it, big or small, he knew precisely how it should look. because he knows what other people have. and he knows what he is missing. ]

[Keith considered that, looking to one side for a moment.]

I guess. Maybe, just... we want different versions. That's probably why I understand it, even if it's not exactly what I was hoping for. Having that acceptance, people who care and respect you, being part of something and belonging... it's the same no matter what version of it we want, right?

[ loki cocks his head. ]

That may be so. I would not know much of it. I've never held much of acceptance or respect.

Mm.

[Keith didn't know what to say to that, so he looked around again for a moment before spotting the glowing blue cube. It looked a lot like something infused with Altean quintessence, but he knew it wasn't from his own world. That meant it likely could be something completely different and definitely dangerous. He set the cape back where it had been hanging and approached the cube carefully.]
