Before you post your topcomment, please:
1. Check the first letter of your character's name as its written in our tags. A-M names go to the other post, and N-Z names comment here.
2. Make a note in your topcomment if anything especially triggering or graphic might show up in the Calibration. If you're not sure if something's worth noting or not, we suggest listing it anyway, just to err on the side of caution.
3. Put your character's name (it can be shortened or different from the tag, this time) in the subject of your comment. This will help visitors find you easily, and help us update the list below.
4. Post your comment! It's fine if everyone's Calibrations end up looking and reading very different from one another. As long as you're having fun and following our guidelines, you're good to go. :)
5. If you have any questions or concerns during Calibrations, you are welcome to send them towards the mod team at any time, as always.

[Well, it does something. Daneel stirs, blinking, oddly disoriented.]

Yes. That is. Helpful. But don't disconnect. Me yet.

    [Cole pokes the screen again.]

    Do I keep doing this?

[Daneel gives an odd little twitch. No.]

In the lower left corner, I believe, is the right spot.

[Cole pokes the screen in the lower left corner, firmly but not roughly.]

    That?
    thezerothlaw: (curious)

    [personal profile] thezerothlaw 2015-11-04 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
[That does the trick. Daneel reaches back and unhooks the cable from his neck, closing the seam so that it's completely hidden.]

Thank you. I am much improved.

[Cole gives a tiny smile and nods, stepping back form the console.]

    Good. You looked uncomfortable.
    thezerothlaw: (listening)

    [personal profile] thezerothlaw 2015-11-07 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
    It was...

[He pauses on his word choice.]

Perhaps not 'uncomfortable,' but disconcerting to have my internal power source bypassed. In any case, I bid you welcome.

[Cole cants his head, blinks and stares a bit vacantly.]

    Hello.

    [personal profile] thezerothlaw 2015-11-10 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
    Hello, Cole.

[He's quite content to sit here like this.]

It is fortunate that with you, at least, I need make no secret of my mental abilities.

    [personal profile] killedwithlove 2015-11-12 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
[Cole sits up on the edge on the console, swinging his legs back and forth.]

No. I already knew. I know lots of things.
    thezerothlaw: (curious)

    [personal profile] thezerothlaw 2015-11-15 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
What sort of things do you know?

    [An honest question.]
    killedwithlove: (Cole)

    [personal profile] killedwithlove 2015-11-16 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Things about people that hurt them. I can't tell you a lot of them, because they're private. But I know them, I know how it feels and what causes it. But... sometimes people think and feel different and I can't really understand that?
    thezerothlaw: (chinscratch)

    [personal profile] thezerothlaw 2015-11-16 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
Friend Giskard had the mental abilities I now have for over twenty decades before he passed them to me. He understood very well some of the subtleties of the human mind, better than many humans do. Partner Elijah possessed no such power, but he too had a deep understanding that I admired greatly.

[Daneel falls silent a moment, thinking on hard on both of them, fellow robot and long-dead human.]

It is a skill. It is one I aspire to.
    killedwithlove: (Explain to me)

    [personal profile] killedwithlove 2015-11-19 09:46 am (UTC)(link)
I don't understand. How did he pass them to you?
    thezerothlaw: (calm)

    [personal profile] thezerothlaw 2015-11-19 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
It was a programming matrix he was given, though the one who gave it to him did not know what she had done. He repeated it to me, and I incorporated it into my own brain.

[One of the 'windows' flicker into life, Daneel's view of a robot in his arms, obviously in distress by the way it moves jerkily, the strain in its voice, the flickering light behind its glowing eyes. While Daneel listens carefully, Giskard repeats a long string of numbers with increasing difficulty.]
    killedwithlove: (Conversational)

    [personal profile] killedwithlove 2015-11-20 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
[The words mean nothing and the replay does little to help him understand it, but the basics of it make sense to him.]

    You wove into you.
    thezerothlaw: (chinscratch)

    [personal profile] thezerothlaw 2015-11-20 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. That is a good way of putting it. Before that, I could not touch minds as I do now.
    killedwithlove: (Cole)

    [personal profile] killedwithlove 2015-11-20 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
And then he gave you the pattern to weave into yourself.

You can reweave yourself. That's very powerful.
    thezerothlaw: (calm)

    [personal profile] thezerothlaw 2015-11-20 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Potentially, yes. Still, it remains... difficult.

    [He frowns.]

I have done it twice. Once with the Zeroth Law, and once with Giskard's matrix, but the former took me a long time, and Giskard was preparing me for the latter beforehand. A misstep could easily be fatal.
    killedwithlove: (Calm)

    [personal profile] killedwithlove 2015-11-21 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
    What is the Zeroth law?
    thezerothlaw: (curious)

    [personal profile] thezerothlaw 2015-11-21 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
A robot must not harm humanity, nor through inaction allow humanity to come to harm.

    [He's very serious.]

The First Law then states that a robot must not harm a human, nor through inaction allow a human to come to harm, unless doing so comes into conflict with the Zeroth Law. The Second Law states a robot must obey all orders given by a human, except where doing so comes into conflict with the Zeroth and First Law. The Third Law states that a robot must protect its own existence, except where doing so comes into conflict with the Zeroth, First, and Second Laws.

The Three Laws are built into all robots. The Zeroth is... my own addition.
    killedwithlove: (Explain to me)

    [personal profile] killedwithlove 2015-11-22 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
So... if a man was going to push a button that would tear apart the world, you could hurt him to stop him but not otherwise?

    [He's trying to understand.]
    thezerothlaw: (concerned)

    [personal profile] thezerothlaw 2015-11-22 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
That is precisely it. Even then, I would prefer to cause as little harm as possible. On the other hand, if the destruction of a world were contingent on the continued existence of humanity, that is what would be necessary.

    [Yes, that came up once.]
    killedwithlove: (Conversational)

    [personal profile] killedwithlove 2015-11-22 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
You must preserve humans above the world they live on.

    That... seems wrong to me.
    thezerothlaw: (adorablebot)

    [personal profile] thezerothlaw 2015-11-23 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Does it? Certainly, it would not be preferable to destroy a world, but there are other planets humanity may thrive on. What would you suggest?
