The mention of threats only gets a raised eyebrow. Someone has to keep Loki on his toes, after all.

"I work with the Avengers because our goals have coincided. Should they fail to do so, I will resign."

He sees that eyebrow and raises his own. Really, no matter how pretty the words, behave or I'll... is explicitly a threat.

"And what goals do those happen to be?"

[unbearablynaive]

"Several," he admits, relaxing his expression into a small smile. "Primarily, I'd like to see how Earth develops from this point on. I'm not fond of entities attempting to force that development in their own image."

[complicatedliar]

His lip curls. "Instead, it shall occur under your benign observation. Since that couldn't possibly have any effect."

Uh huh. So unimpressed. "Though I certainly can't blame someone for wishing to play god. It's quite fun."

[unbearablynaive]

"Less so than if someone were actively using the Mind Stone for their own ends," he says dryly. If he didn't want any effect at all, he certainly wouldn't be an Avenger.

"No doubt it is for the god. Rather less so for everyone else involved."

[complicatedliar]

"You'd like to think so," Loki observes. "But I think that shows a rather base misunderstanding of causality and the chaotic nature of chance."

He laughs. "At least someone's having fun then." As opposed to living in enforced boredom.

Does it? Or is he only projecting that? The Vision smiles rather than responding.

"Small comfort to everyone else."

[complicatedliar]

If it's a deliberate misunderstanding, that's even worse. Ugh, but he hates optimists.

"The universe owes no one comfort."

That would explain why these two don't seem to be able to get along very well.

"No. But wouldn't you agree that a happy populace is a productive populace?"

[complicatedliar]

Among other reasons.

"A happy populace is a complacent populace," Loki says. "The two are very different. Really, people are at their most creative when they're hungry or fleeing for their lives, haven't you found?"

It's certainly been the case in his life. Though the hunger he means has nothing to do with food.

"Now, that would depend entirely on what sort of production you wish to see. Necessity is the mother of invention, as the saying goes. Yet if war kills your workers and destroys the fertility of your lands and denies access to your resources, those on top suffer as well. Relying on a crisis to invigorate those who remain is a very shortsighted goal."

Did SHIELD develop weapons of great power after their contact with Asgard? Certainly. Did they then nearly use their superior weaponry to wipe out the most creative sector of their own populace? Certainly. It's not a cycle he approves of.

[complicatedliar]

"Mmm. Well, if we speak of cattle, then yes. Let them graze as peacefully as they will. But the ones I find interesting are the mad ones." It reminds him of a poem that Frigga had given to him during his confinement. He's not so altruistic as that, but save him from the ones who aren't mad. They'll bore him to tears.

"I find everyone interesting," he says quietly. "You consider that a failing, I'm sure, but a placid cow and a wild bull look alike to many."

[complicatedliar]

"I think it a sign that you've no taste," Loki says. He's already got a lot of negative opinions about Vision as a thing wrapped around the Mind Stone. "But you are quite young, yes. The boredom creeps."

He snorts. "Only those that have no discernment. Spare me your implications. While I suppose I am open to having misestimated you, you know better than to underestimate my intellect."

"Yes, I am young." No doubt anyone from Earth is young by Loki's standards, but--well, they're usually not quite as young as the Vision is. Luckily for his own sake, he finds it amusing.

He raises an eyebrow. "I am young," he repeats, "but I am not so foolish as that."

[complicatedliar]

"I've never been one to assume children are fools," Loki remarks. "I've always preferred them to those who have grown rootbound by their prejudices. It's a matter of creativity."

"But you are also no child."

[unbearablynaive]

Does Loki consider him rootbound and uncreative, then? Or do his words have another meaning? It could, naturally, be both. Like his brother, though, he is at least saying that he doesn't consider all Midgardians to be like children simply because their lives are shorter.

Not that one can necessarily trust what Loki says.

"Do you doubt my creativity?"

[complicatedliar]

"I've yet to see it, though that has little meaning." He's keeping an open mind there. That's the smart way to go. His lips curl. "But the mask of a child may hide many things."

"We've not been here long," he agrees, "especially yourself. I should hate to think you'd draw any premature conclusions."

Well, sure. That's what masks are for. "As does a mask of humanity."

[complicatedliar]

"I play the long game," he drawls.

And then laughs. "It is no fault of mine that the little mortals insist on assuming I'm one of them because they happen to look similar to the Asgardians." Though of course, this isn't his true appearance either.

[unbearablynaive]

"I admit, I have the ability to appear human and choose not to." For...precisely the same reasons, actually. He wants people not to assume he's one of them. "My habits are not such that I would fit in with the crowd at any rate; I find it saves time in the long run to have the conversation up front."

[complicatedliar]

"And yet still you choose to appear far more innocuous than you are." He snorts. "I am not in the business of pleasing the expectations of anyone. Let them attempt to adjust."

[unbearablynaive]

"I suppose I could turn into a ten-foot-tall musclebound warrior-type, given some creative interpretations of the law of conservation of mass, but it would be awfully difficult to navigate a ship as such."

[complicatedliar]

"Such a limited imagination, a weapon wanting to walk about on two legs. Though I suppose it does throw the little mortals off their suspicion."

[unbearablynaive]

"If you didn't believe being underestimated was a weapon of itself, you wouldn't appear as you do."

As it is, he's remarkable for being maroon and floating off the floor, not because he has world-destroying powers.
